Swapping chorus line for catwalk in aid of Eve

Women singers from Bognor Regis are swapping the chorus line for the catwalk.

The members of The Arun Sounds are staging a charity fashion show on June 17.

The occasion is the first big fundraising event since the ladies' barbershop chorus agreed to support the Eve Appeal.

Marilyn Collins, PR officer for the 30 singers, said: "It promises to be a fun evening and we hope lots of women will come and support this worthy cause."

The show will take place at the Arena Leisure Centre, off Westloats Lane. Tickets and more details from 01243 553429.

The Arun Sounds members, who are based at the Jubilee Community Centre in North Bersted, will be using their appearances at venues such as care homes, fetes and anniversaries to benefit the Eve Appeal.

The appeal has been set up to save women's lives by funding groundbreaking research into gynaecological cancer. Its current focus is on ovarian cancer.

Each year in the UK, about 7,000 women are diagnosed with the condition and some 5,000 die from it.

Annette Martyn, the gynaecological oncology nurse specialist at St Richard's Hospital in Chichester, said: "We are thrilled that The Arun Sounds have chosen to support the Eve Appeal in this way.

"Increasing awareness of key symptoms will improve outcomes for patients with early stage disease."

The charity was chosen after a chorus member attended a fundraising and awareness party held by Annette at the hospital.

Marilyn explained: "Being a ladies-only chorus, we feel an affinity with this charity.

"Some of our members have had a relative or friend who have become victims of this disease. So we are especially pleased to be able to support the appeal and help raise funds and awareness."
