Sweet smell of success at Yapton

Sweet peas were a delight at Yapton Cottage Gardeners' Society's early summer show.

Barnham resident Jeff Haines was the most successful grower of flowers at the show and was rewarded with the Hawthorn Trophy.

An exhibit of three vases from Alan Humphrey also earned the judges' commendation.

The buttonhole rose class had eight fine entries and Stan Crouch, from Felpham, received the Godfrey Challenge Cup for rose exhibits from the society's chairman, Roy Phillips.

Other cut flowers from the open garden included some splendid alstroemeria.

Anne Adams, from Rustington, won the Bill Payne Memorial Trophy for her successes in the cacti classes, while the two child entries '“ Olivia Lisley from Chichester and Yapton's Eloise Horton '“ shared the Junior Flower Cup.

The fruit and vegetable garden was well represented and featured cabbages, potatoes, cucumbers and strawberries.

The show's 240 entries spilled on to the stage as well as filling the main room of Yapton Village Hall to create a considerable visual impact as visitors entered the building.

Some 40 exhibitors were in competition, with two staging for the first time. Nearly everyone, including the newcomers, took prizes.

Of increasing importance to the show is the flower arranging section which was again spectacular. Men and women competed on equal terms.

Cookery attracted about 20 entries, while the photographic images created much interest among the visitors.

The show was viewed by 120 visitors. Many of them browsed around the side stalls and enjoyed cream teas and cakes.

The society's next show '“ with 500 exhibits '“ will be staged in a marquee on August 8 on King George V playing field in Yapton.
