Swine flu shock for family of man found dead by Littlehampton's Oyster Pond

HEALTH chiefs have confirmed that a 42-year-old Littlehampton man found collapsed near the town's seafront last month died from swine flu.

The news has shocked the family of Tony Coman, known to his friends as Elvis Tony, because of the speed with which the infection struck him down.

"It's frightening," his sister-in-law Marianne told the Littlehampton Gazette yesterday (Wednesday, February 3).

"He had been shopping that afternoon, climbed all the stairs up to his flat, took his dog for a walk, and within a couple of hours he was dead."

Tony was found lying on a path near the Oyster Pond, with his greyhound beside him, on the evening of January 12 and was certified dead by paramedics who were called to the scene.

Peter Hayward, flu director for NHS West Sussex, confirmed results had shown that a man who died in Littlehampton last month died as a result of H1N1 influenza, commonly known as swine flu.
