Villagers in East Preston and Kingston will be joining their neighbours in Rustington at the polls to vote for their own neighbourhood plans.

It has taken more than two years of hard work to build the documents, which aim to give residents more power in determining future developments in the villages.

David Sawers, who has been involved in the process of building the neighbourhood plans, is calling for villagers to flock to the polls.

He said: “(Arun’s) local plan contains many good policies to set design standards across the district but the neighbourhood plans can go into more detail, to protect local character and local interests. And, because they seek to put residents’ opinions into practice, residents should want to support their adoption and vote for them in the referendums.”

If the plans are approved, they will become a new level of the planning system, with their policies determining most applications in the two parishes.

However, Arun District Council will still take the ultimate decision on most planning applications. But councillors will be able to use the plans as a guideline for some decisions.

Polls in East Preston will be at the village hall, in Sea Road, and the East Preston Children and Family Centre, in St Mary’s Drive – which will also host Kingston’s poll
