Take a walk on the wildside gardens

On Saturday (June 3) a walking tour of approximately 2.1 miles around eleven beautiful gardens will include six gardens new to the Hospice.

Felicity James, Community Fundraiser for the Hospice says the gardens, which are adjacent to Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, are not to be missed. “Reflecting the history and character of this unique coastal environment, many seaside gardens have been in the same families for generations, and have rarely opened to the public,” she said.

“The shingle bank, that runs from Rye Bay to Dungeness and Northern France is classified as Britain’s only desert. “Within this harsh landscape, a variety of interesting gardens have been created, which we hope will make for an enjoyable day out.”

Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of St Michael’s Hospice and 25 years of Open Gardens, the charity has pledged that this season will be the biggest one yet, with 78 gardens opening and 20 dates to attend through to October.

Felicity added: “Winchelsea Beach has not opened for the Hospice since 2007; this is a rare chance to see how gardens can exist in a challenging environment.”
