Tamarisk Centre closure: replacement services announced

Arun District Council, which works in partnership with Age UK to fund activities for over 50s, announced on Monday that the centre was to close after 29 years.

With the lease of the centre, in Beach Road, due to expire, services will be offered across the eastern Arun district.

St Mary’s church hall, in Church Street, Littlehampton, will host sessions on Mondays and Tuesdays from January.

The Laurels Centre, in Rustington, will be the venue between Wednesdays and Fridays.

Hot lunches will be provided daily at both venues.

And in addition, Chilgrove House, in Wick, will host activities on Thursdays and Fridays.

Diane Henderson, chief executive of Age UK West Sussex, said: “Older people have enjoyed services for 29 years at the Tamarisk, and now we are looking forward to an equally successful future at our new venues.

“Our new timetable really has got something for everyone, whether you’re interested in learning IT skills, Pilates or table tennis, or ballroom dancing, so come along and try one of the fun activities.”

Councillor Paul Wotherspoon, Arun cabinet member for community services, congratulated Age UK West Sussex on its commitment to encouraging Arun residents in later life to live active, healthy independent lives.

He added: “Age UK West Sussex has worked really hard to improve access to its services by providing activities at more locations. This is a really exciting development which will help to combat social isolation and improve the wellbeing of older residents.”
