A spokesman for Southern Water said: “The damage was caused by a third party accidently drilling through the pipe whilst carrying out work in the area.

“We deployed tankers to manage waste flows whilst work was underway so customers could continue to use their facilities.”

The Environment Agency also attended the site and carried out an inspection while temporary traffic lights were set into place.

A spokesman for the Environment Agency said: “We have been advising Southern Water throughout the incident and they have been deploying tankers, taking all necessary pollution prevention measures and will repair the pipe as a priority.”

On Friday morning, Southern Water confirmed that the work was complete.

The water firm spokesman added: “These tankers have been stood down.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Angmering residents flocked to Facebook claiming the roadworks caused road chaos for commuters heading home after work.

Members of the public are encouraged to report any incidents of pollution to the Environment Agency on their 24 hour emergency hotline 0800 807060.
