Tax campaigners: Hastings council '˜wasting taxpayer's money'

The Taxpayer’s Alliance (TPA) claims Hastings Borough Council has ‘frittered away’ £450,000 on temporary agency staff in nine months and spent £113,710 on 18 properties since August.

TPA states council tax in East Sussex has risen by 70 per cent since 1996 and will be campaigning in Hastings to raise awareness and put pressure on the council.

“Far too much taxpayers’ money is wasted, keeping taxes high and taking precious resources away from essential services,” TPA’s chief executive Jonathan Isaby said.

“It would be nothing short of immoral to saddle the next generation with our trillion-pound debt mountain.

“We need to strip out wasteful and unnecessary spending and start living within our means again.

“For too long taxpayers’ money has been spent with impunity, with little accountability and not enough transparency.

“TPA will be coming to Hastings to remind those we trust with our money that we’re watching how it is spent very carefully indeed.”

The group will be at the town hall at 12.30pm and The Stade open space at 2.30pm raising awareness and talking to residents.

The council has been contacted for comment.
