A GENEROUS taxi driver is backing a rally racer's sponsorship bid by working extra hours to pay £20 a week.

Dave Smith, 55, decided to support Andrew Coley's race to reach the top of motor sport after seeing last week's Observer.

Andrew, of De La Warr Road, and co-driver Tim Slattery aim to compete in a 50,000 Subaru Impreza in the British Rally Championship from the end of April but need money fast.

So kind-hearted Dave, a member of Bexhill 100 Motoring Club, calculated what he could afford and approached the pair on Saturday with the offer and first instalment.

Both were shocked by his kindness and it moves them closer their dream. They are hopeful more sponsors, no matter how small, now come forward.

Dave, a motor racing fanatic for 40 years, said: "I feel very strongly that Bexhill has great motoring tradition and anyone trying to further this needs support. Andrew believes he will be successful which is fantastic but he cannot do it alone."

Andrew, 25, said: "It's a huge boost and I'm so thankful to Dave. If more people did the same, we would nearly be there."
