Teacher found hanged

A 61-year-old Polish man was found hanged in a garage in London Road, an inquest heard this week.

Jacek Jablonski was "a sensitive and intelligent" man who came to England in the hope of making a better living but ended his life feeling lonely and depressed.

Coroner Alan Craze returned a verdict of suicide at the Hastings inquest on Wednesday.

Mr Craze said: "He was a sensitive and intelligent man who was exhibiting feelings of self-worthlessness.

"Quite clearly, he was seriously depressed, possibly for some time. It is sad he was not registered with a GP and therefore didn't have immediate access to medical help, otherwise I am sure he would still be with us now."

Mr Jablonski was a divorced school teacher who arrived in Bexhill last July with the idea of making more money than he did back home. He moved in with his niece Joanna Stacholwiak who lives in Claremont Road.

His age was against him when it came to finding work, but he found a job as a care assistant and moved into a bedsit in London Road.

Joanna had described him as "A kind man, a sensitive man, a gentleman with intelligence...but sometimes he would lose it and become nervous, and he was worried about becoming a problem for other people", according to the Coroner's report.

She also said her uncle was depressed and that he missed his family, and was talking of going back to Poland.

She told the court: "Everyone liked him. He was really nice to everyone. But he didn't like himself."

The last time she saw him was Sunday November 5 when she felt his behaviour appeared to normal.

The following Wednesday she went to his lodgings in London Road but there was no sign of him. The landlady checked his top floor room and saw he wasn't there and neither was his bag, so assumed he had gone out with it.

A further search in his sparsely furnished room revealed a large notebook in which he had written what was his suicide note.

Mr Craze said: "He wrote that he was lonely and tired and had made a lot of mistakes, and basically was not happy with himself."
