Teenager re-arrested in Irene Herring murder investigation

A teenager has been re-arrested on suspicion of the murder of Bexhill pensioner Irene Herring.

The 18-year-old from Hastings was arrested by detectives from Sussex Police's Major Crime Branch and is currently in police custody.

Mrs Herring, 85, died at the Conquest Hospital, Hastings, on February 2 following a fire in her room at the Ancaster Court nursing home in Hastings Road, Bexhill, the previous day.

The pensioner died of pneumonia after inhaling smoke during the blaze.

More than 40 residents of Ancaster Court Nursing Home were evacuated to a safe part of the building on after the fire broke out in Mrs Herring's second-floor bedroom.

A team of more than 25 police officers, headed by Detective Chief Inspector Andy Griffiths has been investigating the fire.

Mrs Herring was a devoted Catholic all of her life and took part in activities at Our Lady of the Rosary and St Mary Magdalene's churches.

She met husband David in Bexhill in 1948 when she visited her sister and the couple tied the knot in November 1950.

Mrs Herring also worked as a medical secretary at Bexhill Hospital.
