FOOTNOTES: Chaplin has now decided to adopt me. Chaplin, I should explain, is the large cat who first appeared in my garden last week.

I have named him Chaplin, because he is black and white, has a swagger when he walks and a permanent look of disdain on his face. His arrival coincided with the delivery of a flat pack of a bathroom cabinet I had ordered, then failed to see, the very small print that had the ominous words, ‘self-assembly’ under the illustration. Chaplin looked on with interest as I unpacked the mounds of cardboard and then studied the instructions for putting the anonymous pieces of white painted wood together. Some two hours later, after a lot of cursing and being convinced that the instructions were wrong or there were pieces missing, I finished up with what looked passable like the original illustration. During all this Chaplin had assisted by sitting on the instructions, going to sleep whilst lying on a vital piece of wood, that I searched nearly half an hour for and generally being a typical cat. I finished eventually and we both settled down to admire the finished article, Chaplin with a saucer of milk and cat biscuits, me with a cup of tea and a digestive. Go safely and enjoy your week.
