FOOTNOTES: Twice to Eastbourne this week, the journey lightened by the magnificent display of autumn colours of the trees and hedgerows. My own garden is looking somewhat forlorn now and resembling a rather down-at-heel duchess who hints at previous glories. However, whilst watching one evening through a bedroom window, I saw a sight that cheered me. A young fox was leaping and jumping and throwing himself into the air whilst playing with an old shoe he had found. His coat was glossy and healthy, the eyes bright with the excitement of play. A beautiful tail fanned out as he leapt high after his toy. He was immersed in his game, doing what dogs do, rolling on the shoe and then tussling with it on the lawn. He kept this up for about twenty minutes before tiring and loping off, leaving his toy behind. As he disappeared over the fence, I wished him well. I can never hope to understand what impels those who would kill and cause suffering to these wonderful animals by hunting them and persist even though the practice is unlawful. I left the old shoe on the lawn and the following morning it had gone, perhaps back to some den where the cubs are now enjoying themselves with it. For a few precious moments I had shared the joy of living with a wild animal. It cheered me up tremendously. Enjoy your days, even if you do not have a shoe to play with and go safely.
