CAB: Citizens Advice Bureau drop in advice surgery on the last Tuesday of each month, 10.30am to 12.30pm at the Civic Centre. Advice can also be gained via their website www.citizensadvice.org.uk. Contact CAB office in Lewes. Adviceline 03444 111 444.

EVENING OF MEDIUMSHIP: On the first Friday of each month, 6.45pm for 7.30pm at the Civic Centre. Dorothy Young and guest mediums. Ticket price £7, entry on the door available. Contact Dawn 07951 947709.

DANCE CLASS: Pre-school age 2 to 4 years, £3.50 per session, every Tuesday from 9.15am to 9.45am at the Civic Centre. Contact Anneli Smith via Civic Centre, 01273 589777.

COUNCIL MEETING: Planning and Highways meet on Monday at 7.30pm in the Civic Centre. If there is insufficient business, meetings may be cancelled. Please therefore telephone the Civic Centre on 01273 589777 to ensure that the meeting is being held. Meetings are open to members of the public who are able to ask questions for a 15 minute period at the start of each meeting.

FOOTNOTES: The British summer is a tenuous thing. Startled from my post prandial snooze the other day by the most enormous crash of thunder, which was then followed by a monsoon-like downpour, I thought dolefully of the journey I had to make to London that evening. The company I was doing a voice-over for had arranged a car from Victoria, but I still had to get to Lewes, dry, preferable, in order to catch the train. I began to remember other excursions I had made as a child from London to the seaside, when my mother and I always seemed to choose the one day of the summer that it poured down. We spent most of the day consuming fish and chips, and sitting under cover on the pier, before squelching our way back to the station or coach, for the journey home. Those immortal lines of Edward Dowson floated into my mind. ‘They are not long, the days of wine and roses’. How very true. The rain stopped, the roads dried out, the sun poked its head out for a brief while and the journey I was dreading was in fact comfortable and dry, so the day ended well.
