FOOTNOTES: Seeking to have a few minutes in the garden, before an evening performance at an after dinner event, that evening, I settled down in a deck chair, Panama gently slanted over my eyes, the warm sun playing on my chest and arms as I relaxed and luxuriated in the spring sunshine, eyes gently closed and mind preparing for the coming event. Thus, half dozing, I was suddenly brought back to reality by a small whimper and then the crushing weight of something landing in my lap. I looked down to see a large black and white cat busily settling himself down, turning round and round as cats are wont to do to make themselves comfortable. Having done all that he began to leisurely wash himself, stopping occasionally to stare at me as if to dare me to push him off. I put a hand down to stroke him and after gazing at it suspiciously, he allowed me to carry on. We spent the afternoon together, he rarely moving and me, having got used to his weight, back to ruminating about the evening to come. Eventually, after two to three hours or so, he raised himself from his sleep, jumped down and vanished over my garden fence, without even a backward glance.

I couldn’t help envying such a free and easy lifestyle. To saunter wherever you cared, take your rest as it came and assume that everyone was your friend. There is a lesson there for all of us perhaps. Amidst all the headlines, shouting and pontificating the rights and wrongs of this action or that action, to be able to walk amongst it all, neither caring or being concerned. The final words of the Desiderata came to mind: ‘And whatever your labours and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.’

Enjoy your week and be safe wherever you are.
