SUPPORT GROUP: Breast Cancer Support Group meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month from 1pm to 3.30pm at the Civic Centre. Contact email: [email protected]

BINGO EVENING: On the last Friday of each month, 6.45pm for 7pm start at the Civic Centre. Eight games played for £4, plus an additional Snowball and Flyer game. Free refreshments at half-time break. Proceeds to Mayor of Telscombe’s charity fund.

COUNCILLORS SURGERY: On the first Saturday of each month from 10am to 11am at the Civic Centre. No appointment necessary. Come along and see your local councillors.

FOOTNOTES: Have you ever been in that situation, where you are cruising comfortable through life, when it decides to throw a metaphorical bucket of cold water over you. There I was happily trotting around, congratulating myself for feeling so fit, and seriously thinking of getting a rescue dog to accompany me, as I envisaged long walks through woods and fields, when out of the blue, I wake up one morning barely able to put one foot to the ground and crippled with the dreaded gout. Meetings had to be delayed or cancelled, as I limped painfully around telephoning those I had arranged to meet etc. Walking any distance had become impossible. Even creeping around the lounge had me yelping with pain. Mercifully, I had retained some pain-killers from a previous attack, last year. I gulped them down and settled down to see it out. It took three days to finally leave me and where I could comfortable walk again.

With this salutary lesson in not taking life for granted behind me, the sun decided to put in an appearance as I sauntered around the garden. My previous lady gardener has had to retire and a new gentleman is starting this week, so I wanted to make sure that the garden is reasonable neat and tidy for him.

As I was doing this, I was reminded of my mother, who, when she got old and infirm, I arranged for a cleaner to come in and do her housework. One day, I was visiting her and found her with a duster and spray polish in her hands. ‘What are you doing?’ I asked, ‘Mary is coming tomorrow to do all this’. ‘Well’, she replied, ‘I thought I would do some dusting. I don’t want her to think the place isn’t clean’. Such is life.
