FOOTNOTES: The exercise bike is all very well, but nothing beats a walk through the beautiful countryside that surrounds this part of Sussex. Nothing too strenuous you understand, so I took myself off to Friston Forest to recreate the strolls I used to enjoy with my elderly dog Jack. It was a glorious spring morning, and as I wandered along a woodland path, I was reminded of those beautiful lines of Oberons from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, ‘I know a bank where the wild thyme blows. Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows. Quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine. With sweet musk-roses, and with eglantine’. I once spent nearly a year at Stratford-upon-Avon reciting that immortal verse every evening, which is probably why it always springs to mind. But it helps me to remember that with all its faults, disasters and horrors, this is still a beautiful world. Have a great week and go safely.
