FOOTNOTES: Sadly, I have to report the death of Jack, who has often been mentioned in this column. After a short illness, he took a long last walk around the garden, sat and sniffed the air, watched the birds flying into the trees to their nests and then came indoors, laid down on his favourite rug and with his eyes firmly fixed on me as I stroked his head, passed into that place where there is no pain or illness, where the bones are delicious, the grass and the trees stretch to infinity and there is always a ball to chase. He was my companion for five years, following the death of his previous owner, first sharing with Rupert, my old Golden Retriever, and then always with me after Ruperts’ death some two years ago.hall miss him. RIP.
