Dementia Friends sessions: can help you become part of our dementia friendly community

As part of Dementia Awareness Week 2016, we are teaming up with the Havens Dementia Action Group to run free Dementia Friends Information sessions for residents and local businesses.

As a Dementia Friend you will find out about the small things we can all do to make a real difference to people living with dementia. No action is too small and every action counts in making the lives of people living with dementia a little better.

Although dementia can affect anyone it is more common in older age, with 1 in 14 people over the age of 65 living with the condition. The Lewes district has an older population than the national average, with 23% of residents aged over 65 compared to the national average of 16%, so this is an important local issue.

We’re running two free Dementia Friends Information Sessions that are open to all. Taking place in the Charles Neville room in the Meridian Centre, Peacehaven, these sessions will start at 10.30am and again at noon on Friday 20 May 2016.

They will help people understand what it might be like to live with dementia and help turn that understanding into action by asking people to consider becoming a Dementia Friend. The sessions are scheduled to last about 45 minutes. There is no need to book, just come along.

Bingo Evening: the last Friday of each month 8 games played for £4, plus an additional Snowball (50p per single ticket) and Flyer game (£1 a sheet). Free cup of tea/coffee at half-time break. High Sheriff Award:Local PC Kate Hancock was recently given an award from the High Sheriff, Juliet Smith, for services to the community - congratulations.

Free Patient Transport: How do you travel to your NHS appointments? Did you know that there is a free minibus service that will pick you up from your home, take you to your GP practice and then take you home again? It will even take you to and from Victoria Hospital in Lewes, the Newhaven Rehabilitation and Polyclinic, Anchor Healthcare Centre and the Dermatology Clinic at School Hill Surgery. If you are a patient of the Meridian or Rowe Avenue surgeries you can use the service. It is an easy access bus so buggies and wheelchairs are welcome. You must register to use the service. Footnotes: Drama in my life has normally been confined to the stage or tv and film set, but this week I found myself caught up in the somewhat violent arrest of an alleged shop-lifter in Sainsburys.

Whilst innocently perusing the magazine display unit for something to while away an afternoon in a deckchair in the garden, I was vaguely aware of two large individuals hurling towards me. They hurtled past me to pounce on a young man near me, with the words ‘Gotcha’. Wrestling him to the floor, they effected their arrest. I couldn’t help but appraise their efforts from a professional aspect. During two contracts with the ‘Bill’, we were taught the niceties of street arrests by the police advisor to the programme.

From the mayhem of Sainsburys, I changed my mind and spent the afternoon at Raystede, the dog , and other animals rescue centre. What a heart breaking place this is. The pleading eyes of the encaged animals tearing me apart. The staff do a fantastic job and the volunteers are wonderful people giving up their time to help. I left empty-handed, but I will be back, I know that.
