Tesco application before council next Tuesday

Tesco’s applications for minor alterations to the old Silver Wok site in Brighton Road will be heard by the council next week.

Horsham District Council’s Development Control North Committee will decide the six applications on Tuesday June 4 at 5.30pm.

While the supermarket giant does not need to submit an application for change of use, it needs permission for signage, a canopy, air conditioning units, external alterations, and installation of a cash machine.

The Silver Wok relocated to Queen Street late last year.

Because of 28 objections received plans have to be heard at committee.

Forest Neighbourhood Council has also objected. In the officers’ report it states: “Forest Neighbourhood Council objects to the external siting of this ATM machine. By having the ATM outside means that the public will be able to access it at all times of the day and night.

“This will increase traffic in an already congested area to the detriment of the local residents. There will be an increase in noise, an increase in lights and additional traffic movements, which again would be detriment to local residents.

“At a preliminary meeting this council had with Tesco, it was suggested that the ATM should be positioned inside the building to avoid light pollution. FNC referred Tesco to the ATM which is inside the Co-op store near Horsham Matters as a good example of how to work with the neighbourhood.”
