The glory of Bexhill gardens

THE SUMMER drought and hosepipe ban has done little to detract from the beauty of some of Bexhill's gardens.

That much was obvious as crowds gathered at the open gardens of Bexhill Horticultural Society.

Visitors could visit five locations across the town for a small fee with proceeds going to the Great Dixter Trust.

Plenty of blooms were on display at each property with flowers ranging from roses and sweet peas to wild orchids.

Valerie Zebedee said she had put more effort in to her Eastwood Road garden over the last three or four years and went for a "more wild" look in some areas.

Horticultural society president Nick Hollingsworth was on hand to greet guests at his Collington Lane West home with refreshments.

He showed off a variety of plants and a lawn purchased via the internet.

John and Mavis Eves south facing garden in Rookhurst Road sported a sloping rockery and rare orchid.

The Pebsham Lane home of George and Ellen Damen also had something unusual - an orange tree.

The large Third Avenue back yard belonging to Tracy Docksey featured themed woodland and pond areas.

Tracy also grows her own plants in polytunnels and keeps chickens in the garden.

She said: "We have been here for 16 years and it was all lawn when we came. The amount of lawn keeps getting smaller each year."
