The House on Poo Corner

HORRIFIED Julie Pascoe became a prisoner in her own home after a river of stinking sewage flooded her front and back garden.

A blocked pipe outside the mum-of-two's house in Salvington Road caused the muck to erupt out of the drains early on Tuesday morning and cut her off from everything, and everyone, else.

Leaning out of her bedroom window, Mrs Pascoe said: "There's no way of getting out. To get out we would have to paddle through poo. It stinks. There's a condom floating outside the front door at the moment." The entire front of the house, including the garage and side alleway, was at least three inches under water. The stinking river of filth had also spread to a nearby house and was running down the back garden, threatening to kill a pond full of expensive Koi Carp fish.

Mrs Pascoe said: "I first heard bubbling at around 8am. I thought it was the cistern. I got up, looked out of the window and couldn't believe what I was seeing."

She said it took Southern Water two hours to arrive at her home to sort out the mess, and that was only after the police had called the fire brigade.

Her children, 11-year-old Stuart and Victoria, 13, were also trapped inside while she called her husband David back from work in Burgess Hill.

Neighbour Shirley Essery said: "We have been on holiday for two weeks and only got back on Sunday. We have got sewage running down our back garden at the moment and we have Koi. The fumes could kill them."

Penny Hodge, spokeswoman for Southern Water, said crews were sent to Salvington Road in Durrington as quickly as possible. She said: "There was a blockage in the sewer outside the property which resulted in sewerage overflowing into the garden. There has been no internal flooding to the property."

She said a tanker was dispatched to clear the mess and make sure everything was returned to normal. She added: "We appreciate the nuisance and inconvenience this sort for thing causes."
