The race gets underway while Chris Fairman and Richard Popple register entrants.

More than 120 riders took part in the event, now in its fifth year, which is organised by Rye and Winchelsea Rotary Club in conjunction with Rye Wheelers.

The object of this year’s event was to raise funds for the rebuilding of the local Rye Scout headquarters,

With a choice of four differing routes, from 10km to 100km, it allowed professionals as well as fun riders to take part.

Riders ranged from 7-8 years to mid eighties. As the riders were individually sponsored it will be many weeks until the final collection of charity money takes place, however, race supervisor Richard Popple says that £1,000 has been raised so far.

The cash should give the Scout building project a big push on top of donations previously given by the Rotary club and the assistance which the club has given with architectural, planning and quantity surveying matters.

Each race participant was awarded a medal for their efforts and refreshments were served at the finishing line in Market Road.

President Chris Fairman said “This event is now well established and is a regular fund- raiser for the club.

“Even in the years when rider numbers dip it seems that it still is a popular event with a large number of regular participants, I really appreciate their loyalty.”
