Third serious accident on single stretch of road

AN ELDERLY pedestrian was taken to hospital following a collision with a car on Collington Avenue on September 22.

The accident marks the third recent serious accident on that stretch of road, which was the site of two road deaths in as many weeks earlier this month.

The incident occurred at around 10.15am, just past the Tesco Express store near the Colebrook Road junction.

The man, believed to be in his mid-80s, is said to have been crossing the road when he was involved in a collision with a Honda Jazz driven by a local woman.

It is believed he may have stumbled whilst crossing the road and fallen into the path of the vehicle.

The man was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The driver is said to be uninjured, but suffering from shock.

Police closed off the stretch of road awaiting the appearance of a Crash Investigation Unit. The driver and witnesses to the event were being interviewed at the time of press.

Collington Avenue has endured a troubling record for collisions in recent weeks.

An 83-year-old pedestrian was killed after she was struck down at the Birkdale junction of the road on September 7.

And a collision on the afternoon of August 30 claimed the life of an 85-year-old man crossing the road near the junction of Terminus Avenue.
