Those magnificent men...

THE sun shone, the planes took to the air and the crowds packed Shoreham Airport at the weekend to watch.

It was the annual Shoreham RAFA air show, marking the centenary of powered flight and the 60th anniversary of the Royal Air Forces Association itself.

Five hours of flying were held each day, with everything from a Frenchman with his microlight and flying geese to a record-breaking stunt by aerobatic pilot Denny Dobson, the roar of the Harrier jump jet and the nostalgic Battle of Britain flypast.

The Utterly Butterly wing-walking team brought four planes to Shoreham for the first time and a balletic helicopter display by ace pilot Dennis Kenyon ama-zed visitors.

When the crowds weren't peering up at the skies, there was plenty of entertainment on the ground,

with vintage transport displays, static aircraft, a fairground, craft tent, the lookalike Dad's Army, trade stands and stalls.

Four pilots who fought in the Battle of Britain watched as a brace of Spitfires roared over the airfield.

The display brought back memories for Flight Lieutenant Robert Haylock, Wing Commander Bob Foster DFC, Flight Lieutenant Jack Toombs and Squadron Leader Iain Hutchinson, who were invited as special guests to the show.

The voluntary organisers hope the show will raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for the Royal Air Forces Association.
