PARKING spaces were at a premium in Newhaven on Saturday as thousands flocked to the Dieppe Market.

The rainy start to the day did not deter the crowds and Denton Island and High Street were soon swarming with people eager to snap up purchases from French and local traders.

President of Newhaven Chamber of Commerce Norman Mayhew said the market was even busier than last year.

And unusually for Newhaven the town centre was bustling. 'Someone came up to me in the town and told me that for the first time ever they had not been able to park in the multi-story car park because it was so full,' said Mr Mayhew.

As well as stalls there were attractions including jugglers, magicians, stilt walkers, dance displays and live music. Newhaven Youth Marching Band kept traders and shoppers entertained in the High Street.

Mr Mayhew, whose term as president ends later this month, said he hoped the market would continue.

'Hopefully, the people of Newhaven will take on the mantle and make it an annual event as it attracts thousands of people to the town.'
