Held together by threadbare material and with a safety pin to keep the head in place, Ted has retired from 35 years of travel and active family life.

Owner Stuart Edwards, from Bognor Regis, described the bear as a huge part of his childhood.

“I was only around three years old when I was first given my teddy bear and I decided to name him Ted, not very original but as I was so young I guess it was the easiest name to remember.

“Ted has been on pretty much all of my family holidays from the age of three up until the age of 38.

“Ted is well and truly retired now as too much movement will most likely cause a limb to fall off or maybe even his head will detach from the safety pin and threadbare material holding it together.

“I have a two-year-old daughter and she has already spotted Ted and wants to play, maybe he will come out of retirement for some more holidays one day soon.”

Ted was runner-up in the Time4Sleep competition to find the nation’s most loved teddy bear. The winner was Hayley Atkins, 49, from Bexhill.

Jonathan Warren, director, said: “We have had a great time looking through all the entries and it’s nice to discover so many people still own their childhood cuddly toys and simply can’t bear to part with them.

“Many of us crave some type of comfort during the night, whether that’s from a partner, a blanket or a teddy bear. Feeling calm and relaxed, however you achieve this, can result in a deeper, more refreshing night’s sleep.”
