Three day ale and music bonanza in Lewes

Lewes Con Club’s action-packed annual Beer and Music Festival gets under way at 12noon today (Friday), and continues tomorrow and on Sunday.

This year’s theme is the best of Sussex beer with 12 real ales from the county on offer, plus Harveys Best and Old.

Just some of the intriguing and exotic names on offer are enough to work up a thirst: Plateau, Liquid Gold, Hercules IPA, Mandarina Red and Bonfire Toffee.

Day two will feature a talk on the explosion of micro-breweries – there are at least 40 in Sussex alone.

It will be given by expert David Muggleton, Editor of the Sussex Drinker and member of the British Guild of Beer Writers.

He will be joined by award-winning Mark Tranter, former Head Brewer of Dark Star, who will introduce his new Firle brewery, Burning Sky.

Also on Saturday is a ‘Meet the Brewers’ tasting session featuring David and Mark, alongside the Rev Godfrey Broster (Rectory Ales), Mark Lehmann and Frank McCabe (Lesley Foukes (founding partner of Langham) and Bunny and Gary Lucas (Kissingate).

The session will be followed by a short film about beer and brewing, ‘Ale and Hearty’.

On the music front, the festival is proud to present two special bands – The Brian James Gang, with legendary rock guitarist Brian James, who are playing this evening, and The Alter Eagles tribute band who will perform The Eagles classics tomorrow. Locals The Moonshine Band will be appearing on Sunday afternoon. Music reservations and further festival details are available on the website,
