Three fight in by-election

THREE candidates are fighting the by-election for the Uckfield New Town ward Wealden District Council seat after the resignation of former councillor Julia Hey.

The election will be held on July 17.

LibDem Carol Sweetland, (wife of town councillor Bob Sweetland) from New Road has lived in Uckfield since 1976.

From 1890 she has worked as senior practice nurse at a large local GP practice.

She said: 'That work has given me great insight into New Town, a community that I have come to know well over the years, and for which I have great respect.

'If elected, I won't pretend to be able to cure all the ills that can beset the residents of the area, but I do promise that I will do my very best to represent your community at Wealden, fight to protect your environment, and fight on your behalf to resolve the local issues that concern you.

Representing the Conservatives is town councillor John Carvey from Farriers Way.

He has lived in Uckfield for 23 years and plans to retire soon after 24 years with local solicitors Dawson Hart.

He was elected to the town council in May 2007, is vice chairman of general purposes and chair of both finance and personnel sub committees.

He is passionate about the countryside, disturbed by potential development at Bird in Eye, enjoys photography, is a Bonfire society follower and a supporter of the reinstatement of the Lewes-Uckfield rail link .

He said: 'If elected I aim to try and make Uckfield residents' lives happier.'

The UK Independence Party is represented by Michael Pursglove who lives in Pevensey.

He is concerned about corruption and waste in local and national government.

Born in Nutley he ran a shoe repair business in St Leonards before moving into the Wealden district eight years ago.

He has worked with the Pevensey Community Action Group and is a supporter of the Lavender Line.

He wants to bring Christian values to local politics.
