THREE MORE PARKING METERS BLOWN UP

THREE more parking meters have been blown up in Lewes '“ bringing the total to around 200 since charges were started just over two years ago.

The meters, one in Western Road and two in King Henrys Road, are the first to have been exploded since a 5,000 reward was offered by local authorities in early December for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the culprits.

The meters were blown up with fireworks between Monday and Wednesday morning.

Said Lewes transport manager John Robbins: 'It is always disappointing when this happens. The consequences and risks are well known.

'We will see what happens next. We are determined to deal with the problem.

'The cost of the damage to the machines, together with lost revenue, is in excess of 300,000 '“ money that was earmarked for Lewes street improvements, such as the upgrading of Station Street '“ that at present now can't go ahead.'
