Tide of Light parade and festival returns to Worthing

Worthing's lantern parade and firework festival returns this Saturday for what promises to be a '˜spectacular' event.

Several thousand families are expected to enjoy this year’s Tide of Light festival, a free community event held on bonfire night, now in its fourth year.

A team of volunteers will help run the afternoon’s festivities, which will kick off in South Street at 3pm with a giant market, filled with street food from around the world, according to Jess Estcourt, a Tide of Light community group representative.

This year will see free craft making sessions in which children can create their own lanterns to take along to the parade. Two sessions will run at the Pavilion Theatre on the seafront at 3.30pm and at 4.30pm, aimed at children of preschool and first school ages. Although these are free to attend, anyone wanting to participate must register advance online at eventbrite.co.uk.

Templates to make lanterns at home can also be downloaded from the Tide of Light’s website.

Children with their newly made lanterns will join the procession which leaves the theatre at 5.45pm.

The parade will be headed by stilt walkers, the mayor, the town crier and others, who will lead crowds to the centre of town.

Live music will be played from a main stage at the top of South Street, where visitors will be treated to performances by acoustic folk-rock band Big Yellow Taxi and Rooster, among others.

The event will finish with a bang as fireworks are set off from the end of the pier at 8pm.

The event, launched in 2013, is run by Worthing Lions Club. Collection buckets will be passed around throughout the event.

Jess said: “We encourage everyone to bring loose change and fivers as the event is ultimately all about raising funds for the Lions’ causes.”

The event is supported by Worthing Theatres and Adur and Worthing council. It has been funded by community grants and sponsored by private businesses including Michael Jones Estate Agents.

Jess advised: “Town will be busy with people enjoying the party so please take advantage of the full seafront for watching the fireworks and take usual safety precautions.”

She hopes that people in Worthing will ‘light up, wrap up and have a great time’.
