Tietastic record attempt at Horsham Circle of Life festival

Environment awareness campaigner Carrie Cort of Sussex Green Living will be attempting to beat the current Guinness World Record of wearing more than 260 ties at her Green Play and Display event on Friday June 3 from 2-4pm.

Families with primary school aged children are invited to join the fun by bringing a picnic and some ties to make this challenge a success.

Carrie aims to highlight the reuse of neckties in a fun and creative way while also raising funds for the William Penn Primary School in Coolham, which urgently needs to carry out building work to replace a temporary building which has been in long term use.

Carrie said: “This event includes lot of fun games where families will learn about the Three Rs – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, there will be a Battle of the Eco Warrior (recycling race), school teams are welcome.”

She added: “Ties are an environmental nightmare. Charity shops don’t want them and they get stuck in the material recycling machinery.”

Before the World Record attempt, there will be a mini fashion show of up-cycled or remade clothing, accessories and bags, using lots of ties,

The West Sussex County Council Waste Prevention Team will be on hand to talk to the public and interfaith minster Trish Norman will lead a thought provoking ceremony to honour planet Earth and all its rich gifts.

Children are invited to participate in the DVD and book swap shop – bring one and take one, there will be a textile recycling point where people can bring unwanted textiles which will be recycled through the local charity Bags of Support.

Also as part of the week-long Horsham Circle of Life Festival Carrie will host a teenage textile creative up-cycling workshop on Wednesday June 1 showing young people how create new, unique outfits and accessories out of their old clothes.

To donate textiles or ties for the events take them to Sussex Greener Living branded recycling bins at the Quaker Meeting House, Worthing Road, Horsham or in William Penn School playground.
