Major Peake and his US colleague Tim Kopra were outside the International Space Station (ISS) for four hours and 43 minutes before their spacewalk was cut short due to a water bubble inside Col Kopra’s helmet.

Despite the abrupt end, the pair had already completed the main objective of the spacewalk, which was to repair a broken voltage regulator on the ISS.

Major Peake posted on Twitter again a couple of hours later, saying: “Wrapping up today’s spacewalk activities. Huge thanks to the ground teams who make it all possible & keep us safe out there - you guys rock!”

The spacewalk was broadcast live on computers and television screens across the world.
