Time is running out to apply for Lions triathlon

THE Bexhill Lions Club's annual charity triathlon takes place on Sunday May 29 and for anyone who fancies a fitness challenge, there's still time to enter.

The event for adult contestants consists of a 750-metre sea swim, a 20km bike ride and a 5km run. There will be shorter courses for 13-16 year olds. Wherever possible the triathlon will be inclusive of those with special needs. The closing date for entries is this Sunday (May 15).

Bexhill Lions PR officer Andrea Etheridge said they are expecting more han 300 contestants, along with their families and supporters, to descend on the area. “The event will bring a tremendous boost to the town with great benefit to hotels, boarding houses, restaurants, pubs, shops and other local amenities.

“St Richard’s Catholic College has kindly allowed us to use its facilities for car parking and for the competitors to register. Registration opens at 5.45am, with the first wave of competitors entering the sea at 7.40am.”

Age does not appear to be a factor for competitors with the youngest athlete being 13 years old, and the oldest checking in at 64. Men are dominating the show with 233 entrants, compared to 58 women.

There are 290 entrants from the UK, including 119 from East Sussex, plus one competitor from France.

The starting point for the triathlon is opposite Sutton Place, near Galley Hill. There will be minimal disruption to traffic with De La Warr Parade closed from 6am to 1pm from the Sea Road junction to Galley Hill.

Andrea said the success of the triathlon is thanks not only to the hard work of Lions Club members and their families, but from the support they receive from local businesses.

“Amongst our many sponsors we would especially like to thank the following local organisations: Andrews Estate Agents; Brewers decorating merchants; Daltons, Hastings; Earls Bakery; Freedom Leisure; Jem Office Supplies, St Leonards; and local photographer Rickpicks who will be covering the event with four operators capturing action images throughout the day and at the finish line.”

Sadie Yapp, Sales Manager at Bexhill Leisure Centre, said: “This is a wonderful local event to support.

“ I’m delighted to note that it’s inclusive for both youths and those with special needs.

“We wish all competitors the very best of luck and congratulations to the Bexhill Lions for organising such a great event.”

All proceeds raised by the triathlon are donated to good causes. For 2011 these are Sussex Air Ambulance and St Michael’s Hospice, with some funds retained in the Bexhill-on-Sea Lions Club Charitable Trust Fund for charity projects in and around Bexhill.
