Time running out for car amnesty

DO you have an unwanted vehicle that has reached the end of its life and don't know what to do with it?

Council bosses are trying to encourage car owners to dispose of their vehicles responsibly and are holding an amnesty for all unwanted cars, which ends on Friday, April 29.

From April 2004 to March 2005, 288 cars were picked up by the council at a cost to the tax payer of nearly 11,000.

Paul Willis, the council's environmental co-ordinator, said: "This cost does not include officers' time or their wages. We have to include the time it takes to get out to the places.

"The number of cars dumped in the town in recent years has marginally improved but we are getting rid of them much quicker now."

Wendy Knight, communications manager, added: "Vehicles in almost any condition will be accepted, although they would ideally be completely intact with all four wheels included."
