Tip plans disappoint

PEOPLE have voiced their concerns at plans to extend the life of a rubbish tip by more than two years.

Viridor Waste Management, which runs the Horton landfill site in Small Dole, has drafted plans to keep the tip open until October, 2010, with an additional capacity of 400,000 cubic metres of waste.

The firm invited people to view the plans at an exhibition at Small Dole Village Hall on Tuesday.

Therese Hay has lived in the village for 30 years and said she was unimpressed by Viridor's plans to extend the life of the dump.

"I am disgusted," she said. "The smell is absolutely appalling. There are days I can't go in the garden because of it. I have had enough. If I can make a protest in any way, then I will."

Dan Cooke, Viridor's external affairs manager, said: "If we miss this opportunity, we have no chance to go back. We are providing an essential service for the safe and effective disposal of waste."
