Tip's future in the balance

PEBSHAM tip could be pressed into service for new waste measures if sites cannot be agreed elsewhere.

Proposed changes to a county-wide waste plan suggest using Pebsham for materials recovery and waste transfer if a proposal for this at Mountfield fails.

The next step in deciding how the East Sussex and Brighton and Hove will manage the waste produced in their areas will get underway on Wednesday.

The two authorities will be seeking comments from the public on changes to their joint waste local plan. The plan is a framework that will guide the way in which all types of waste in the area are managed.

It sets out guidance for developers on what sort of waste facilities are needed and where they might go. Once finalised, the plan will enable the two councils to weigh up whether applications for planning permission are acceptable.

The changes follow public comments on the first draft of the plan. The key changes are:

* Extension of the life of the plan from 2011 to 2015;

* Additional higher recycling and recovery rates;

* Allocation of a new site for materials recovery and waste transfer at Uckfield, in place of the original proposed site at Maresfield;

* Allocation of a new materials recovery and waste transfer site in Eastbourne;

* Prediction on waste volume increased.

The consultation will last for six weeks, finishing on May 14.

The process is tightly regulated by Government: comments can only be made on changes to the plan - comments on unchanged parts cannot be considered. Forms have been provided which people should use to make their comments.

Copies of all these documents can be seen or bought at County Hall in Lewes.

They can also be inspected at all local libraries at deposit points in the area.
