Titnore Lane protest

AS around 70 people stood waving their banners and placards against a proposed development in West Durrington on Saturday, just two Worthing councillors were left to address the unforgiving crowd.

If it wasn't quite Rourke's Drift - after all, it was only a stone's throw from Tesco - then it must have felt like it at times.

Councillors Bob Smytherman and Hazel Thorpe took to the megaphone to answer questions from the crowd outside the Durrington Community Centre, near Tesco in New Road.

As emotions ran high, people tried to speak at once and questions were fired left, right and centre at the councillors.

And the campaigning group behind the protest is now calling for a referendum on the plans.

The protesters, including young children and pensioners, arrived armed with banners and posters.

One even dressed as a tree.

Dawn Smith, 37, from Worthing said: "My boyfriend made the costume for me. He stayed up all last night making it. He thinks I am mad doing this but he supports me because I believe in something."
