Top progress score for students at Bede's

Bede’s Senior School, in Upper Dicker, was the best in Sussex and 35th in the UK when it came to its ‘value added’ score.

The score measures how well a student performed during Key Stage 4 - the biggest single predictor of their results at A-Level - and compares it to their final achievement, revealing how much progress they have made.

As such, the progress of the less academically able students can be measured as easily as those who achieve all A*s in their exams.

Jason Henham, head of sixth form, said: “Independent schools in the United Kingdom have only been given a ‘value added’ ranking for A-Level in the Department of Education’s league tables for the last two years in the past 10.

“With Bede’s continuing to refuse to top-slice its pupil intake based on academic ability, this pattern of achievement implies that what we do clearly works for students, no matter their perceived level of ability.”

John Tuson, academic deputy head, added: “The educational landscape is constantly changing, and those changes are genuinely exciting. While these results act as an endorsement of Bede’s unique approach to education, we have a further-improved sixth form curriculum set to launch in September which will offer our students the chance to perform at an even-higher level.”

Headmaster Dr Richard Maloney said: “Every teacher at Bede’s works exceptionally hard to ensure that each individual pupil has the opportunity to achieve truly great things, both in their exams and in their lives beyond school. We will do everything we can to make that happen.”
