The NDS will work in partnership with commissioners, families and individuals. The service follows the King’s Fund ‘Enhancing the Healing Environment’.

Orientation is enhanced by artwork reflecting the current season, calendars and large clocks, the use of natural light, visible staff and photographs of local scenes. Familiarity is enabled throughout the service with features including a café, pub, photographs, memory boxes and traditional objects. The extensive and safe garden offers outside space to enable residents to enjoy the outdoors. Optimising physical health, meaningful activity, quality of life and social function, it provides a more appropriate environment giving the best chance of a positive outcome, leading to a better quality of life. The NDS also offers a cost-effective service that minimises the need for staff to provide constant support and is effective in reducing sedation, enhancing physical well-being and providing a safe, bespoke environment.

Dr Fonseca said he is delighted to be leading a talented and skilled multi-disciplinary team with knowledge and experience specific to the needs of the people using the NDS, adding: “This exciting and innovative service is designed to work with service users whose complex needs can result in totally inappropriate placements leading to a poor quality of life.

“Our specialist model of care and our dementia-specific environment manages the complex needs of the service users and provides them with a better experience.”
