Top tax collectors

MORE THAN Â£69m was collected by Arun District Council in the past year as its performance put it among the best councils in the country.

The council's officers raked in 98.2 per cent of the total council tax due for the 2006/07 year compared to a national average of 96.9 per cent.

Compared to neighbouring councils, Arun had the third-highest collection rate in Sussex.

The district council is continuing to clamp down on non-payment this year.

More than 2,000 summonses have been issued in just three months of this year to people who have fallen behind with their payments.
