Ms Davies, a mum-of-two, from Haywards Heath, said she was honoured to be selected as the new Mid Sussex MP and said she had 'very big shoes to fill' – as she succeeds Sir Nicholas Soames, who represented the district since 1997.

Lib Dems' Robert Eggleston came second in the race, bringing home 15,258 votes.

Speaking to the Middy ahead of the big result, he said: "First of all, I just want to thank everybody who voted for me on Thursday, I really appreciate it.

"We have had a great campaign in Mid Sussex. We have certainly increased our share of the vote significantly compared to 2017.

"We are all a bit tired. Clearly and nationally things aren't going as well as we would like for a number of reasons .

"We fought the election on a very clear remain platform and I guess it would be fair to say the nation is rather weary of the discussion around Brexit and that's probably why the Conservative Party are doing as well as they are and are going to form a majority government.

"But this is one part of a continuing, story, not just in Mid Sussex but across the country, and for me, here, in this constituency, it's all about building a platform for the next election when we intend to do even better than we are doing this time."

Labour candidate Gemma Bolton, 21, secured 11,218 votes. She told the Middy: "I am really proud of the positive policy-led, community-led campaign that we have run and and I'm really proud of the message that we have got out and what we are fighting for. Whatever happens, we will get up tomorrow and fight for those values in the community."

Green Party candidate Deanna Nicholson, who brought home 2,234 votes, said it had been an amazing six weeks campaigning and thanked her 'fantastic' team.

She said the feedback from hustings in Burgess Hill and East Grinstead showed people in Mid Sussex were worried about the environment. But, she said, the election had become the 'Brexit debate'.

She commented: "People have voted on that thinking that things are going to be simplified after the 31st of January. They are going to find out it isn't, so my job is to make sure all the promises that have been made - whoever wins this - is held to account for everything they promised and it does actually happen and that the people get what they think they voted for."

She vowed to carry on the fight, adding that it was important to 'keep up the Green message'.

Baron Von Thunderclap, representing The Official Monster Raving Loony Party, secured 550 votes. He said: "It is the sixth time I am standing here. It has been a very enjoyable election. I have really enjoyed the hustings meetings and also the pub meetings as well. It has been all round, as always, a well fought contest."
