Towers triumphs in speaking competition

Four schools took part in the first round of this year’s public speaking competition, hosted by Shoreham and Southwick Rotary Club at Shoreham Academy last Tuesday.

The Towers Convent School in Upper Beeding beat Shoreham Academy, Shoreham College and Brighton and Hove School for Girls for a place in the next round.

Towers chairperson Harriet Williams introduced their speaker, Georgia Saunders, who was praised for her informative and interesting talk. Becca McCallum then gave their vote of thanks.

Rotary club president Alison Boram gave awards for individual performances – best chairperson, Luke Mepham of Shoreham Academy; best speaker, Miles Atherton of Shoreham College; best vote of thanks, Becca McCallum of The Towers Convent.

Rotarian Dr David Gordon said it had been a wonderful evening, bringing together so many talented young students from local schools, and the standard was going up and up each year.

He thanked the three guest adjudicators, chairman Liza McKinney, Jane Ogden and Geoff Howitt, for their work in selecting a winner from such high standard of presentations.

He also thanked Shoreham Academy principal Heidi Brown for arranging refreshments after the main competition.
