Seaford and Lewes town centres will be blitzed by mechanical street-sweepers, barrows and new cleaning equipment after the scheme saw success in Newhaven.

Lewes District Council staff regularly carry out street cleaning and litter picking but this series of deep cleans pays particular attention on those who are responsible for putting up unauthorised signage around the town, including advertisements on lamp posts and banners attached to railings.

Councillor Paul Franklin, Lead Member for Waste and Recycling at Lewes District Council, said: “I am delighted to be involved in the first of a number of special clean-up days planned across the district as we focus attention on the small things that when combined make a big difference.

“Litter picking, removing waste and deep cleaning the precinct makes the area clean and attractive for people to visit and spend time. The council is also keen to send a message to people and advertisers who display unauthorised signage. We are checking on the culprits and any unauthorised signage will be seized.”

Any unauthorised signage that is removed will be stored at the Robinson Road depot for seven days and then destroyed.

The council urges people to use bins to dispose of their litter and cigarette ends, or take your litter home with them. The council will issue £75 fixed penalty notices for littering offences.

If you see a litter bin that needs to be emptied you can report it online at www.lewes.gov.uk/community/15254.asp.

The deep cleans use the council’s recently-purchased new fleet of vehicles. Many additional features include on-board weighing systems, additional storage for street cleaning equipment, 360 degree cameras, safety beacons and facilities for staff to hand wash and store their personal items.
