About 20 members of public also attended the service, along with the town clerk, Liz Jones, and the Mayor, Cllr Mary Rowe.

The prayers were led by Hailsham's Royal British Legion padre, the Rev Peter Webber. At 11.45am, the standard was lowered to half mast in salute and people in the town centre remained silent for two minutes. Waitrose supermarket did not open until 2pm out of respect.

Books of condolence are still available to sign at Hailsham Town Council's offices in Market Square and at Polegate Town Council's premises in the High Street.
