THE famous Heathfield town sign has mysteriously disappeared.

Thieves took the wrought iron sign, valued at approximately 1,500, sometime over the past two weeks. And Heathfield and Waldron Rotary Club, who own the sign, want it back.

Rotary Club assistant secretary George Claydon said: It s obviously been stolen by some mischievous souls, or removed to become a trophy on someone s front gate. We would love to see it back.

He said the sign, which has hung in Heathfield for over 50 years, weighed at least 50kgs, and would have needed at least two people to carry it.

He added that the sign depicted the Cuckoo Lady releasing the first cuckoo of spring and had close links to the Cuckoo Trail and the town s Cuckoo Market.

The sign was sited on a large oak post on the north side of the High Street, about 50 yards west of Mill Road, when it went missing. It had been moved there from the other side of the road two years ago after Rotary Club members had cleaned and renovated it.

If anybody has any information on the wherabouts of the sign, they should contact Eastbourne Police on 0845 6070999.
