Traffic calming scheme proposed for village centre

Angmering Parish Council has put together a plan for a new traffic calming scheme which would extend Angmering's current 20mph driving zone.

The proposal stems from the Angmering Neighbourhood Plan published in 2014, and consists of a number of speed cushions and raised tables that would stretch from Water Lane over to the A280 bypass leading on to the A27.

West Sussex County Council are working with the parish council on the plan, which will be debated at a future county council meeting.

The proposal follows feedback from residents that say drivers use the village as a cut-through at peak driving times to avoid the congested traffic on the A259.

A spokesperson for the parish council said: “One of the biggest problems is that the length of road on the A259 is a single carriageway so it gets quite congested, hence why people cut through the village. This means there is a massive amount of traffic in the morning.

“An extension of the road has been in the works since about 2004. The concept of the scheme is that it will discourage people from coming to the village, and we will have a safer road system in Angmering.”

A public consultation about the plans did face some opposition, with a total number of 33 complaints about the scheme.

They included concerns about drivers in the village being delayed by the zone when driving, as well as cushions and the current pinch points on the road being called ‘ineffective’.

Chairman of the parish council Susan Francis added: “In the seven years I have been a councillor the main issues I have heard from parishioners is traffic speeding through the village and pinch points on the roads. The problem is that people have a heart attack trying to squeeze through when there are oncoming vehicles, and then they put their foot down before they get to the next obstacle in the village.

“The whole point of a traffic calming scheme is to keep people at the speed limit, which in this case is 20mph. I’ve ensured that everybody has had their say and the proposal hasn’t been dropped.”
