If local people support the proposals, it will be possible to start construction in the spring and summer of 2007.

Visitors to the exhibition will also be able to see a display on the Lewes air quality management area.

Lewes District Council last year identified the area around Fisher Street as needing special attention to reduce air pollution.

Cllr Sarah Osborne, lead member for environment, said: 'We know that slow moving traffic in Fisher Street and Station Street, combined with historic buildings, means slower dispersion of air pollutants.

'Road transport is a major source of air pollutants and we need to concentrate our efforts on finding ways to reduce it.'
