Some feared the proposed developments in the area would create traffic jams at Junction 11 (Pease Pottage) at a consultation in Cottesmore Golf Club, Pease Pottage, on Tuesday (September 29).

Charlie Collins, transport consultant, said the scheme by developer Thakeham would only improve congestion in the area.

Planners had taken into account housing developments including Kilnwood Vale, Forge Wood in Crawley and Copthorne in its traffic projections for up to 2025.

Junction 11 connects the A23, A264 and the M23. Extra lanes and traffic lights on all of the gyratory’s exits were planned.

The T-junction entrance into the service station would be replaced with a five arm roundabout with two access points for the five acre site.

The scheme came about after John Shemeld left the charity £6m in his will, Bill Bridges donated the site, which is worth more than £5m, and Thakeham pledged it would cover the costs worth £4m and provide a community hall, shop, cafe and shop for the hospice. St Catherine’s needed to expand to meet growing demands of the region’s ageing population. Its existing site in Crawley had no room for growth.

Giles Tomsett, St Catherine’s Hospice’s chief executive, said: “It’s very helpful because we were setting the hospice up in a field we would be continuing the keep the hospice very much as an institution and it’s not a institution - it needs to be part of a community where crossing the threshold is not scary where the care you receive from us is life affirming and bring a great quality of life of your final days.”
