The scheme will widen around two kilometres of single carriageway to dual carriageway in Angmering and Littlehampton, cutting journey times and pollution, West Sussex County Council said.

Preparation works, such as clearing the land of trees and shrubs next to the A259 in Angmering, began months ago and were recently resumed after a break while a legal dispute was settled.

But weekend and night-time closures are set to take place in October as the construction work begins.

A West Sussex Highways spokesperson said: “Every effort will be made to limit inconvenience during this major improvement scheme but there will be some disruption, for which we apologise.

“Road users are advised to please take an alternative route, if possible, or allow extra time for their journeys.”

The scheme includes widening part of Worthing Road in Littlehampton to a dual carriageway from the new Lyminster Bypass roundabout at Highdown Drive – under construction – to the Body Shop Roundabout.

A new pedestrian and cycling path will be installed to the south and the existing controlled crossing point will be retained.

It will also widen the Roundstone Bypass in Angmering to a dual carriageway between the Station Road Roundabout in Angmering and the A280 Roundabout.

This will feature a new cycling and pedestrian route to the south, separated from the main carriageway by a verge, the county council said.

New controlled pedestrian crossing points will be included at Haskins and at Station Road.

Sunday, 4 October, night-time closure: traffic management will be installed for the safety of both road users and the workforce around the central islands, which are to be removed or adjusted. A 30mph, temporary speed limit will be introduced between Highdown Drive and the Body Shop Roundabout. Right-hand turns into Olliver Acre and Cornfield Close will be temporarily prohibited.

October 5 to 10: two-way traffic will run on reduced road widths while the traffic island work is ongoing.

Saturday, October 10: the A259 will be closed overnight at the Littlehampton side of the scheme to install traffic management and a contraflow system, which remain for about 11 months.

A night-time closure on Sunday 11 October while traffic management is installed around the central islands and 40mph zones will be introduced. Right-hand turns into Lowertrees Nursery will then be permanently prohibited.

From October 12 to 16, two-way traffic will be running on reduced road widths while traffic islands are removed or adjusted.

A night-time closure will follow on Saturday and Sunday, 17 and 18 October, to install traffic management, with narrow lanes and a 40mph zone will be introduced between the junctions.

Letters have been distributed to nearby residents and the scheme’s online page will be updated during the different construction phases.
